I think in the end, Snape’s good actions balanced the bad, but ignoring his flaws does a disservice to him and J.K. Rowling. His relationship with Lily was an obsession, not love.

THANK YOU, OP!! Finally, someone who understands that it’s a creepy and unhealthy obsession. If he truly cared about Lily, he would have done everything to protect James and Harry. He would have wanted to give Lily everything possible to make her happy, even if that wasn’t him. He also wouldn’t have been such a dick to Harry. I don’t care that he looked almost exactly like James. He was still Lily’s son. In Snape’s eyes, that should have earned him more than the shitty treatment he got. Snape was basically a grown man bullying a freaking 11-year-old.

When Snape heard the prophecy, he didn’t know who it was about. He didn’t know it was between the Potters and the Longbottoms, hell he didn’t even hear the whole thing. He was out of the loop with anyone outside of the deatheaters so he probably didn’t even know Lily was even pregnant. When he found out Lily was in trouble grief struck him and he went straight to Dumbledore, he could have been killed easily by Dumbledore or any deatheaters that found out. Dumbledore made him a spy, and when the Potters died leaving poor Harry all alone he was told he would watch over the boy FROM A DISTANCE when he arrived at Hogwarts. And that’s what he did. Sure he was mean to the boy, but that’s because he had a part to play. Sure he hated James, that was because of years of torment and stealing his only friend away. You’d act the same too if you were in his shoes. Snape secretly cared for the boy, you see that when he yells at Dumbledore for using the poor boy, having Snape protect him only so he can die “at the right time”. When Snape died he gave Harry his memories, not anyone else. When Snape died he looked up into the face of Harry and into the eyes of Lily. Yes he loved Lily, Yes he hated James. But he cared for Harry too. Enough to tell him the truth and enough to help him in his quest.

Okay let me just add a little something here. Even if he didn’t know the prophecy meant Lily, as soon as he found out, yes he went to Dumbledore but to save HER. He didn’t care about Harry and certainly not James. Did he watch over Harry.. yes. But he only did that because of Lily. the whole time the only thing he cared about was Lily. When Dumbledore told Snape what Harry’s fate was all along Snape didn’t care what it was, he cared that he had spent all this time protecting him FOR LILY! Not because he actually cared for him, but because he “always” loved her. Don’t pretend he did anything he did because of him. It was all because he felt he owed Lily. When he died he gave Harry the memories because that is what he was supposed to do. Harry had to know that he had to die. And Snape obviously wanted him to see how much he lover his mother. once again LILY. Every single thing Snape ever did for Harry was because of Lily not because he cared for harry himself.
